چکیده

A classical problem in database theory is to verify whether there exists a relation (or database) instance satisfying a number of given dependency constraints but the issue of handling constraints on aggregate data has not been much investigated so far. This paper introduces a new type of data dependency, called count constraint, that requires the results of given count operations on a relation to be within a certain range. Count constraints are defined by a suitable extension of first order predicate calculus, based on set terms, and they are then used in a new decisional problem, the Inverse OLAP: given a fact table, does there exist an instance satisfying a set of given count constraints? Count constraints can also be used into a data exchange system context, where data from the source database are transferred to the target database using aggregate operations.

Estimating Range Queries Using Aggregate Data with Integrity Constraints: A Probabilistic Approach

In fast OLAP applications it is often advantageous to provide approximate answers to range queries in order to achieve very high performances. A possible solution is to inquire summary data rather than the original ones and to perform suitable interpolations. Approximate answers become mandatory in situations where only aggregate data are available. This paper studies the problem of estimating ...

An Online Environment for Mining Association Rules in Multidimensional Data

Data warehouses and OLAP (online analytical processing) provide tools to explore and navigate through data cubes in order to extract interesting information under different perspectives and levels of granularity. Nevertheless, OLAP techniques do not allow the identification of relationships, groupings, or exceptions that could hold in a data cube. To that end, we propose to enrich OLAP techniqu...

Research Directions of OLAP Personalizaton_ISD

In this paper we have highlighted five existing approaches for introducing personalization in OLAP: preference constructors, dynamic personalization, visual OLAP, recommendations with user session analysis and recommendations with user profile analysis and have analyzed research papers within these directions. We have provided an evaluation in order to point out i) personalization options, desc...

An Information-Theoretic Approach for Privacy Protection in OLAP Systems

We address issues related to the protection of private information in Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) systems, wherea major privacy concern is the adversarial inference of private information from OLAP query answers. Most previous work onprivacy-preserving OLAP focuses on a single aggregate function and/or addresses only exact disclosure, which eliminates fromconsideration an im...

Extending Practical Pre-Aggregation in On-Line Analytical Processing

On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) based on a dimensional view of data is being used increasingly in traditional business applications as well as in applications such as health care for the purpose of analyzing very large amounts of data. Pre-aggregation, the prior materialization of aggregate queries for later use, is an essential technique for ensuring adequate response time during data ana...
